The wood sheets had been the most common and popular natural wrapping material in Japan since around the 5th century until quite recently before papers and plastics took over. The paper-thin wood sheets made from Japanese red pine, so beautifully smelled, have high air permeability and perform well in hygienic so they are great for wrapping food or to use in cooking (ex: use in the steamer). They'd also make a wonderfully unique gift wrapping or can be used as writing paper.
